The 2018 Vals & Sals have overcome many obstacles to make it to the top of their class academically.

Tinisha Anisa Eve (Barran) Simpson

Tinisha has been involved in cheerleading, volleyball and cross-country. She also is a member of student government, the National Honor Society and has served as social awareness officer of the JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) program. Tinisha will study biology/pre-med at IUPUI in the fall. She wants to become an anesthesiologist.

Joi Somer Moseley

Joi, a member of the National Honor Society, is a native of Barbados in the Caribbean Islands. In the fall, Joi will study culinary arts at Ivy Tech Community College. She plans to become a restauranteur.

Linaizisa McNeal

Linaizisa, a former John Marshall student, is a member of the National Honor Society. Linaizisa will major in business at either Ivy Tech Community College or Bennett College, an all-girls school in North Carolina. She plans to become a real-estate agent and agency owner.

Mariah Voyles

Mariah, a former John Marshall student, serves as secretary of JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates). She is a member of Arlington’s choir and student government. In the fall, Mariah will attend either Ivy Tech Community College or IUPUI to major in elementary education and minor in culinary arts. She plans to become an elementary school teacher.

Rachael Steelman

Rachael is a member of the National Honor Society and has played both softball and volleyball at Arsenal Tech. In the fall, Rachael will attend the University of Indianapolis to major in computer science. She plans to become a programmer.

Tania M. Pliego Torres

Tania is a member of Arsenal Tech’s theater program and show choir. She also has participated on both the soccer and tennis teams. Tania will major in brain and behavioral sciences at Purdue University. She plans to become a pediatrician or pediatric neurologist.

Jennifer, a first- generation middle school, high school and college student, is president of Broad Ripple’s chapter of the National Honor Society and vice president of Student Council. Jennifer will attend Indiana University beginning this summer and will major in international studies. She plans to become a humanitarian and lead a corporation.

Jasmine, who is multilingual, interns for an English-speaking Japanese news site interviewing Japanese guests, writing reviews and translating news. Jasmine will attend Colorado University in the fall to major in marketing, with certificates in international business, talent management and quantitative finance. She plans to become a business owner.

Binuri Lasanya Hapuarachchy

Binuri is a member of the National Honor Society and volunteers at Eskenazi Hospital, the Domestic Violence Network, and the No More Club. Binuri will attend the University of Notre Dame this fall to major in neuroscience. She plans to become a surgeon.

Maria, a first-generation high school graduate and college student, is an activist with the Domestic Violence Youth Network. She will attend Butler University to double major in political science and peace and conflict studies. Maria plans to become president and CEO of a nonprofit organization that empowers youth.

Esmeralda, a first-generation college student, is a member of JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates), the National Honor Society and the Yearbook Club. Esmeralda enjoys coding and will major in software development at Ivy Tech Community College. She plans to become a Web developer.

Jaina has been a member of George Washington’s band since 8th grade. She plays the trombone and has been drum major for three years. In the fall, Jaina will attend Ivy Tech Community College to study culinary arts and photography. She plans to become a pastry chef, restauranteur and photographer.

Abiodun is an artist and athlete, who is a member of the Drama Club, plays soccer, and spends most of his time drawing. Abiodun will study psychology, art and technology at Butler University in the fall. He plans to become a psychologist and artist.

Boluwatife, a native of Nigeria, is a member of Northwest’s volleyball and tennis teams, the National Honor Society, and the JROTC Drill and Raiders team. Boluwatife will attend Ball State University to study public relations. She plans to focus on public relations skills in the area of immigration law.

Tylyn is an avid writer, social justice activist and drag performance artist. In the fall, Tylyn will attend the University of Indianapolis. Although undecided about his major, Tylyn is leaning toward sociology. He plans to pursue a career in policy analysis and advocacy.
